Cambodia Gambling Dens

[ English ]

There is a fascinating history to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just across the border from next door Thailand, where casino gaming is banned. Eight gambling halls are based in a generally tiny space in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling dens is in an excellent destination, a 3 to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest wagering centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The phenomenal income accrued from the gambling dens ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a couple of limitations requirements for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mostly Thai; although, investment sources are cryptic. The borders are ceremoniously open from 9:00 a.m. to 1700, and though visas are allegedly needed to cross, there are ways around this, as is true of most borders.

The initial Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving only one gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary barge casino, features one hundred and fifty slot machines and sixty table games. The Naga gambling hall never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat banque, four tables of chemin de fer, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The initial casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown before long followed. There are 150 slots and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machines and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred slots and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and 96 gaming tables, including 87 baccarat banque (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machines and sixty six of the normal tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight casinos in Poipet, also in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a multinational resort and hotel compound that features numerous conveniences in addition to the gambling hall, which offers ten thousand square feet of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and 88 gaming tables.
